So what’s it about?
A farmer sends his dog, Max, to find the thief that’s been eating all of the carrots, berries, beans, and cherries. He discovers a fly sitting on a carrot, assumes it’s the thief, and chases it all over the farm, leaving a rabbit, a pig, a goat, and three crows to stand guard over the food. Little does Max know that the animals are the thieves! Will he figure out the truth?
What did we think of the book?
First of all, Max is such an adorable dog…I think Joshua wanted to keep him! He loved how silly all of the animals were, promising to guard the food they were caught hiding among and waiting for Max to run away before digging in. He especially loved watching the farmer and Max’s discovery on the last page of the book! I enjoyed getting to use funny voices to tell the story — it’s a really great read-aloud — and talking to Joshua about being honest and not taking what doesn’t belong to you. It was a short and simple conversation (Joshua is still two, after all), but it was nice to have that little chat.
Would we add it to Joshua’s bookshelf?
We really liked this book. I think I’ll be purchasing a copy for his birthday in September! I hope you’ll give it a try, too!
