So what’s it about?
Are You Sleeping, Little One? tells the story of how different animals, from ducks and fish to giraffes and dogs, sleep with their mothers. It concludes with a child adorably falling asleep in her mother’s lap.
What did we think of the book?
Joshua correctly identified every type of animal in the book, with the exception of the caterpillars (I guess we need to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar again). This, of course, speaks to the quality of the illustrations; not only were they accurate, but they were beautiful as well. Joshua and I also talked about what each baby animal was called, from duck/duckling to kangaroo/joey and so on, which brought a bit of science into the story (and which I very much appreciated!). The rhymes itself were sweet and gentle, and most easily read in the calm voice parents use when reading bedtime stories. Such a lovely little book!
Would we add it to Joshua’s bookshelf?
You have your classic bedtime stories, like Goodnight Moon and The Going to Bed Book…well, make room for one more. Are You Sleeping, Little One? is destined to join the list of classics in no time. We’re putting a copy in Joshua’s bedtime story basket, and I hope you’ll do the same!
