Over the last month or so, I’ve been making dietary and lifestyle changes in an effort to drop some of my post-baby weight. I feel a little better, but that feeling hasn’t been reflected on the scale as strongly as I’d been hoping for. Then, yesterday, this photo comes out and completely ruins everything:

I love sweets, and ice cream is one of my favorites. It reminds me of summer, of scrambling to eat the ice cream before it turns into soup. I saw peanut butter fudge, chocolate and hazelnut, and salted caramel in the picture above and died a little. I don’t stand a Ben & Jerry’s pint in hell’s chance of avoiding these…I am headed for certain doom.
But maybe not! I remembered the oft-repeated phrase, “everything in moderation,” and came back to myself. I’ve never liked the idea of denying myself things I love for any reason, but portion control has always been a problem. The solution, therefore, is simple and threefold:
1. No eating out of the container. I’d reach the serving size, see all the ice cream still in the container, and say, “One more bite!” And one turns into two, then three, then five, and before you know it, the whole pint is in my belly and I’m suffering from brain freeze. I’m trying to exercise some measure of control, so I can’t let that happen.
2. Scoop out the serving size into one of Joshua’s bowls. They’re smaller and will appear fuller than they would had I used a regular bowl!
3. Leave off any toppings. No sprinkles, no caramel sauce, no chocolate syrup. These flavors won’t need them anyway, since they’re probably packed in with enough sugar to send a diabetic into a tailspin. I’m sure they’re amazing just the way they are….
Sorry-not-sorry for the little Bruno Mars reference there.
No denial, just moderation. Plus, the pints will last longer that way! This may seem dumb to you, but it’s become a serious test for me. No denial, just moderation. This is something I can do! Who wants to try it with me?
**Quick update: These new Ben & Jerry’s flavors are in stores now! I found all of them in my local Target but only picked up the Peanut Butter Fudge one (they weren’t on sale). I can’t wait to try it!
