“What’s your favorite Valentine’s Day baked good?” Today’s writing prompt asks a very simple question, and requires but a very simple answer.
Of course, long story short…
When I was a child, I loved the chocolate-dipped, sprinkle-coated butter cookies from the long-standing bakery near my grandmother’s house (and in fact, those delicious cookies were one of the foods I constantly craved during my pregnancy). In more recent years I might have said cupcakes, but I wouldn’t have meant it. For years I didn’t have a favorite sweet treat that came from a bakery. Cupcakes and cookies, while delicious, were just all right. That’s not to say that I don’t have a favorite bakery, because I certainly do: I think everyone should visit the Sugar and Sunshine bakery in Plainsboro, New Jersey, at least once. It’s small and adorable and all the treats will take care of your sweet tooth.
These days, though, I prefer baking my own goodies, though rarely my own recipes. I’m a big fan of food bloggers, and I have several favorites among them. Two of these favorites are mainly “sweet treat” bloggers. One’s blog led me to the cookies I’ve come to call Santa cookies (it’s exactly what it sounds like — they were sweet and small and perfect to leave out for Santa on Christmas Eve), and I’m planning to bake them again for Valentine’s Day, along with The Hubby’s favorite treat, which came from the other blogger.
So, without further ado, may I present Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Cookies from Sally’s Baking Addiction. I have a picture from the first time I made these…they were a HUGE hit and disappeared very quickly. They are, without question, my go-to cookie. And the best part? While their name calls for red food coloring, I’ve made these in a variety of colors and they came out looking just as good!
And The Hubby’s favorite? That would be the Red Velvet Fudge Bars from my friend Lindsay at LIFE is better in PINK! I’ve also got a picture of these. They’re quick and easy — created from red velvet cake mix, which I always keep a box of in my pantry now!
And there you have it! These are the treats I’m making for Valentine’s Day. Do you have any baking in your Valentine’s Day plans? Let me know what you’re making — and link me to the recipes, if you have them or got them from a blog — in the comments!
